NSW Stage 6 Working Scientifically / Biology 2018

Working Scientifically (starts term 1, 2018)

YEAR 11:
Terms 1, 2 and 3: SKILLS: A focus on Working Scientifically.
Mindz will guide classes through a 90 minute scientific exploration using EEG headsets we provide.  The session is based around group scientific investigation work, not lecture and presentation. Students will design an investigation and then collect, analyse and evaluate data following scientific method.

Outcome Points:
BIO 11/12-1, BIO 11/12-3, BIO12-5, BIO 11/12-6BIO12-7, INS 11/12-2, INS 11/12-3. INS 11/12-5, INS 11/12-6, INS 11/12-7

Group size: Up to 25 students
Number of students actively involved: All students
Session length: 90 minutes
Space required: large area where up to 5 x groups of 5 students can work without distraction
Equipment required: 1 x laptop per group. We can provide 2 laptops for group use if needed.
What we provide: 1 x EEG per group, data recording sheets, 2 x laptops

Year 12 Biology (starts Term 4, 2018)

Our popular ‘Brain Power’ presentation has been adjusted to not only give students the full EEG Mind Control experience, but focus on infectious and non-infectious diseases of the brain.

The infectious component will look at the latest research into Toxoplasmosis and its effect on human behaviour. The non-infectious component will look at both Parkinson’s Disease and Epilepsy, the causes and new technologies to treat the conditions.

A smaller section is dedicated to the brainwaves that aid information retention and release – vital for students doing the HSC. If our indoor drone is still in one piece after other sessions that day, we conclude with finding a student who can fly it with their brain.

Outcome Points
BIO 12-14: Analyses infectious disease in terms of cause, transmission, management and the organism’s response, including the human immune system:
BIO 12-15: Explains non-infectious disease and disorders and a range of technologies and methods used to assist, control, prevent and treat non-infectious disease:

Group size: Up to 60 students
Number of students actively involved: 8-10 students as ‘demonstrators’
Session length: 90 minutes
Space required: large presentation area
Equipment required: Data projector and large screen TV, proximity to power points
What we provide: EEG equipment, laptops, drone
